Spend a Day at Disneyland in Tokyo Japan

Spend a Day at Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan!

Hi Friends!

If you are planning a trip to Japan and are even a little bit of a Disney adult like Dustin and I and you're even thinking about not going to Tokyo Disneyland, let me stop you right now and say: YOU HAVE TO DO IT. Seriously, this place is pure magic and has a charm that’s totally unique compared to other Disney parks we've been to! The classic Disney vibes mixed with a fun Japanese twist make it such a special experience. When we were planning our trip to Tokyo, we knew both Disneyland Tokyo and Tokyo DisneySea had to be on our must-do list! As you probably know by now, we went in early April and it turned out to be the perfect time—great weather and manageable crowds. Dustin and I soaked up every bit of the magic, food, rides, and fun we could fit into our one day at the park!

🎟️ Getting There + Buying Tickets

We bought our tickets ahead of time through the official Tokyo Disney Resort website, and I definitely recommend doing that — they can sell out, especially during busy seasons or when there's a new attraction. If you want there are other options that you can also use third-party platforms like Klook if you prefer, but we found the official site worked just fine and then I didn't have to worry about transferring anything over or dealing with extra steps, it was just in the app.

Like I mentioned, for us getting to the park was very easy because we were staying at Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama (we loved our stay here so much) and it was a quick 5 minute walk to the Disney Resort Line! But if we weren’t staying right in the area it was also super and we could have taken the train to Maihama Station and then transferred to the Disney Resort Line. The Disney Resort Line feels like the first ride of the day because of the Mickey-shaped windows and handles, which are adorable)! We got there at about 8:15 AM and it opened at 9:00 AM. There was already such a long line forming and I recommend getting there about 45 minutes to an hour early to not be at the back of the line when the park opens. The gates opened a bit ahead of schedule (like at 8:50ish). Make sure you have your tickets on the app, it made things so much smoother!

🏰 How to Skip the Lines at Disneyland Tokyo

I am not an expert by any means, I just wanted to note what we did and noticed about the fast pass system when we were visiting. From what I understand, the classic paper FastPass system is gone much like other Disney parks, and Disneyland Tokyo now uses Disney Premier Access (paid) and Standby Passes for some attractions. We used the Tokyo Disney Resort app to keep track of wait times, reserve access to certain rides, and even order food — it’s a must. We bought the Disney Premier Access to be able to choose a ride right away when we got there and once we scanned into the ride we were able to look on the app again and choose another option from Disney Premier Access. We kept doing this throughout the day and adjusting our plan as we knew the next ride we were going on, it helped a ton with avoiding crazy lines!

One big tip: if there's something you must ride, go straight there at rope drop or pay for Premier Access.

Make the most of your visit with these handy tools available in the Tokyo Disney Resort app:

🎟️ 1. Disney Premier Access (Paid)

  • What it is: A paid reservation system that lets you skip the regular line at select popular attractions.

  • How to use it:

    • Open the Tokyo Disney Resort app, link your park tickets, choose an attraction and select a time slot, pay directly through the app and show your QR code when it’s time to ride!

🆓 2. Standby Pass (Free)

  • What it is: A virtual queue system that gives you a time window to join the line—no payment required.

  • How to use it:

    • Reserve your Standby Pass through the app (subject to availability), come back during your time window and join the physical line.

🎢 The Rides We Went On (And Which Were Totally Worth It)

  1. Pirates of the Caribbean - This is another classic that is pretty much the same every park we have been to but we will always recommend for people to ride it because it is just so good, we loved it!

  2. Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast - This was the cutest ride ever that reminded me of the Rattatouli ride at Epcot in Florida but done 10x better honestly! You get to ride in a teacup and feel like you are immersed into the Beauty and the Beast movie while watching animatronics and listening to music while moving around in the teacup. This ride was done so well and we loved it! This ride was really popular and is a must-see in my opinion! We bought a Premier Access to skip the long line!

  3. The Happy Ride With Baymax - I would compare this ride to the Aliens ride at Hollywood Studios in Orlando! It was a fun ride, the energy from the cast members was amazing and we loved it! It was actually a little bit longer than I expected as well. Because we were trying to squeeze in as much as we could in the one day we were there, bought a Premier Access to skip the long line!

  4. Pinoccios’s Daring Journey - We also really liked this ride, it was pretty nostalgic and just overall enjoyable. It would be great to take any member of your family on it!

  5. Pooh’s Hunny Hunt - The cutest ride, we loved it! It is basically just a journey through the Hundred Acre Wood with cute scenes and getting to see the characters that are in Winnie the Pooh. There was really no wait and we loved it! Definitely a good ride for all ages.

  6. Mark Twain Riverboat - We went on this around 3 in the afternoon because we needed a break from all of the walking that we were doing and it was the same ride as the one in Disney World. We liked going on it and it was a nice break from the crowd!

  7. Haunted Mansion - This is always a classic and pretty much the same everywhere we have been but we will always ride it!

  8. Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin - We didn’t even really know what we were getting ourselves into when we got in line for this ride but we wanted to go on something and we were in the area so we decided on this when we saw it only had like a 30 minute wait. It was a cute ride and was like no ride we have here in Orlando so that was a fun experience!

I know I have said this a few times but we were only there for one day so there were a few rides we didn’t have time to go on. We chose to skip Splash Mountain and Peter Pan’s Flight and then we were sad to realize that Big Thunder Mountain was down for refurbishment when we were there as well so we missed that one. We wanted to make sure that we got to go on rides that we wouldn’t be able to here at home. So yes we skipped out on some of the bigger rides but we were definitely okay with it because each of them seemed so similar to rides that we have here in Orlando at Disney World.

🍴 What We Ate

Okay, real talk: everything I watched about the food at Disneyland Tokyo was that it was so great and some of the best food they had ever had at a theme park and so on… guys, we weren’t fans of the food at the parks, like at all. There were some things that weren’t horrible but besides the food being really cute and themed well, it didn’t taste great. This is obviously just my opinion but I would lower the expectation of the taste of the food at Disney Sea and Disneyland Tokyo quite a bit before you visit! The second day we ate breakfast and dinner outside of the park and for “lunch” we just had a couple of snacks here and there!

🥐 Breakfast

We ate breakfast at our hotel, Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama! We weren’t sure if there were going to be a ton of options for breakfast in the park so we just ate before we went. I’m glad we did this because we were able to get right to going on the rides!

🥐 Lunch

We ate lunch at Huey, Dewey and Louie’s Good Time Cafe and we pretty much got one of everything and was mostly disappointed in the food with the exception of the Bacon and Basil Pizza. We got the Tariakyi Chicken on the Bao Bun which we would rate a 5/10. The last thing we ordered was the special breaded chicken sandwich on a bao bun, I can’t remember what it is called but it was probably a 6/10. Don’t get me wrong, the food was so cute- it just didn’t taste the best!

🍗 Snacks

  • Soy Sauce Popcorn – There were so many kinds of popcorn to try but the lines were seriously always so long. They had flavors like black pepper, caramel, and a curry flavor that smelled great! They had the option to buy popcorn in regular boxes or you could go all-in with a souvenir bucket — we saw people collecting them like trophies, they were so cute but I couldn’t bring myself to get one and then try to fit it in my suitcase on the way back to the states. We ended up trying the Soy Sauce popcorn because there was a short line during a parade that was happening and it made sense why the lines were always so long, it was delish!

  • Churros – The churros were really good, we had many and my favorite from Disneyland was the creme brûlée churro!

🛍️ Souvenirs We Bought (Because You Have to)

Shopping at Disneyland Tokyo and even DisneySea Tokyo was honestly in my top 5 favorite things that we did while we were there. Every store we went into there was SOMETHING that I couldn’t resist picking up. They had so many fun Mickey-shaped snacks that I felt that I couldn’t live without. The merch here is seriously next level, with tons of Japan-exclusive items you won’t find anywhere else—especially all things Duffy, which has a massive fan base here so if you are also a fan, prepare your wallet! Haha We tried to go into all of the stores, like the little kiosks near each land those had themed goodies that you might miss if you walked past. I also couldn’t leave without getting some of the themed plushies that I wouldn’t find here in the states as well as the iconic Mickey Mouse shaped sunglasses that I have seen everywhere! We definitely bought way more than we planned, but I have zero regrets! A little tip, shopping during parades or early morning was much less stressful because the crowds were preoccupied and not shopping, so I would shop during those times if you want to browse in peace!

💡 Tips for First-Timers

  • Download the Tokyo Disney Resort app before your trip and use it!

  • Make sure you log in and link your tickets before getting to the park, you will want to use the app with your linked tickets to get into the park!

  • Check availability for rides and make reservations right after park entry. Availability for the fast pass options can go fast—especially on weekends and holidays!

  • Make sure you bring a portable charger, you’ll be on your phone all day and it will come in handy, I promise!

  • Utilize mobile ordering when it is available at select quick-service locations in the app! It is great for skipping food lines!

  • Pack compact umbrella or raincoat — Tokyo weather can change quickly and again you will be happy you brought it.

  • Make sure you arrive early to the park to wait in line. I would aim to get there at least 30–45 minutes before park opening. The earlier you get in line the earlier you will get into the park and be able to get the fast passes that you want for the rides on your list.

  • I would have a plan going into the day but at the same time be flexible. It is smart to have a few rides on your list that are must-do attractions for you but also be ready to adjust the plan based on crowd levels and wait times for the day that you are at the park!

I can’t express enough how Disneyland Tokyo totally lived up to the hype and then some. Whether you're a Disney die-hard or just looking for a fun day while you're in Tokyo, this park is 100% worth the visit. From the park being so insanely detailed with theming, to the fun and unique rides and all the themed snacks and merchandise, it was such a magical day! If you're going to Japan and a Disney fan and you are on the fence about going, I promise it’s 100% worth it. We hope that someday we will be able to go back and experience it again! Until then, we’ll just be reliving the magic through our memories (and the snacks we brought home)! If you have any questions while planning your own trip or want to know more about anything that I mentioned above, feel free to reach out—I’m always happy to chat about anything Disney! You can comment below or you can send me an email at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible! ✨

Where to Stay and Play in Tokyo, Japan

Hi Friends!

Okay, so I had no idea what to expect when we got to Tokyo—but wow, this city was really, really cool! It’s one of those places that just pulls you in with something new around every corner without really knowing at all what you will stumble upon. One minute you're in the middle of the wild chaos at Shibuya Crossing, and the next you're walking through a peaceful garden or stumbling into the coziest ramen shop down a quiet alley. It’s got this perfect mix of super modern and totally traditional, and somehow it all just works. Whether you're into food, fashion, culture, or just aimlessly exploring, Tokyo had it all. I wanted to share where we stayed, some of our favorite spots that we ate at, and all the fun stuff we saw while we were there!

A Few Things to Have on Hand!

  1. Rain jacket or an umbrella

  2. Small backpack or a crossbody for purchases, we also carried this reusable compact bag for times when we had too many things to carry!

  3. Camera or Phone for pictures

  4. LAYERS! I was so thankful that I had a rain jacket, a sweatshirt and a t-shirt on because I shed and added layers all day long!

  5. Passports - we needed to have our passports anytime we left the hotel!

Remm Plus Ginza - We feel like we couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay in Tokyo than Remm Plus Ginza! The location was perfect it was right in the center of everything we wanted to do and just a short walk from great shopping, amazing restaurants, and the Tokyo Metro, which made it super easy to get around the city! Really that was the main reason that we chose it being so close to the train. We were able to explore spots like Tsukiji Nippon Fish Port Market, Imperial Palace Tokyo, and even took the train to the Skytree Tower with no problems. The hotel itself was modern and stylish, with compact but thoughtfully designed rooms that felt cozy and comfortable. The bed was super comfy, the rainfall shower was amazing, and the city views from the upper floors were a really nice bonus. There was a massage chain in our room which we felt like royalty after walking 10+ miles a day for 10 days straight. The hotel was clean, affordable, and was a nice place to come back to after busy days exploring Tokyo. The only thing we were disappointed with from the hotel was the breakfast. The food was not good and we were really glad that we only pre-booked one morning for breakfast at the hotel! Other than that we would definitely stay here again and/or recommend others to stay here as well!

Sites to See in Tokyo, Japan

Shibuya Crossing - One of the coolest and honestly one of the most overwhelming things we saw in Tokyo was Shibuya Crossing. I believe it is also called Scramble Square, I could be wrong though. I didn’t know what to expect but it’s this crazy busy intersection where (not exaggerating) hundreds of people cross from all directions all at once, but somehow it’s not chaotic — it’s like organized chaos! We went in the Starbucks at Shibuya Crossing and sat and watched the traffic crossing below a few times and to get some pictures and honestly, just standing there watching it happen felt like being in a movie. It was very cool! There was also a ton of shopping in the area! Here are some other things to do in the area:

  • Mario Kart Racing - This is such a cool and unique experience where you drive through neon-lit buildings and iconic landmarks dressed as your favorite Nintendo character. We were so freakin’ excited to do the Mario Kart experience in Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo. We weren’t able to do it so I want to make sure that I share everything you need to do for this so you don’t make the same mistakes that we did! The first thing that you will need to do the Mario Kart experience is to plan ahead. Before you even leave the states you will need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from AAA. You will need this because it is required to legally drive in Japan. Getting the International Driving Permit (IDP) from AAA was so easy, we just printed off the required paperwork and brought $20 with us to a store by us (make sure you check because not all locations do this). Once we got to AAA they took our passport photos for us and we were in and out in like 30 minutes max. The next important thing to note is that three days before your booked time slot you will get an email from the company and they will be asking for proof that you did get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from AAA. This is where we messed up, with being on vacation we weren’t checking our emails and so we never sent them proof and our appointment was canceled and we were refunded. Just make sure you do those two things if you are wanting to enjoy this experience!

  • Shopping -

Imperial Palace Tokyo - This was just such a beautiful spot to spend time at. It is the most peaceful contrast to the busy hustle and bustle just across the street. The gardens are beautiful and so well-kept, and even though you can't go inside the main palace buildings, just walking around the grounds made me feel like I stepped into another era. The mix of super modern and deep history in Tokyo is unreal, we definitely recommend stopping here to take some pictures and take it all in!

Tsukiji Nippon Fish Port Market - We went here on the second to last day we were in Tokyo and we loved it so much, it was such a fun spot! Dustin and I spent like 4 hours just wandering through all the little stalls and just seeing what there was (because there were SO many different things to look at). Tsukiji had tons to see and amazing street food. We started with some melt-in-your-mouth otoro (fatty tuna) sushi that was literally the freshest I’ve ever had, we get it when we are getting sushi here in the states but it was just SO fresh at this market, hands down a must try! They also had this thing called tamagoyaki which was like a sweet rolled omelet on a stick, that was super popular too! There was also no shortage of matcha soft serve for dessert if you are into that! One of the other things we had there were these little like pancake bears with filling inside and they were so good- I loved the chocolate filled bears! This spot is just such a cool mix of food, culture, and just a ton to look at and see! We left full and happy and would stop there if we were in Tokyo again.

Pokemon Center Tokyo DX - This was another really cool Pokémon Center. The Pokemon Center Tokyo DX is located on the 5th floor of the Nihonbashi Takashimaya S.C. main building in Tokyo. If you’re not staying in walking distance you can get to it via the Nihombashi Station. We visited this location on a casual evening and it wasn’t super busy which was nice because we were able to shop at our own pace. The front of the store had an adorable giant Snorlax and I think (at least in my opinion) there were the most kind of stuffed Pokemon to choose from!

Don Quijote Ginza - I mentioned this shopping spot in my Where to Eat, Stay and Play in Osaka, Japan blog post but I will share about it again here! This is a massive, 24-hour discount store that’s an experience all on its own, seriously a shopping experience I will never forget. Anything you could ever want or need was inside this store, beauty products, fun snacks, clothing, toys, kitchen stuff, like anything and everything that you could think of. There is this quirky song playing the whole time and when we were in there, suddenly like three hours had passed. I wish I would have taken photos or a video inside the store but if you look up Don Quijote on Tiktok or Instagram you will get a good idea as to what I am talking about haha!

Skytree Tower - When we were in Tokyo, Skytree Tower wasn’t initially on our must see list but we stumbled upon it while we were walking around and it was really cool to see! It’s this super tall tower—like, the tallest tower in Japan! We didn’t go up in it but you could and from up there, you get these incredible views of the whole city. The tower is crazy modern but also kind of has a cool traditional vibe in its design. If you have some extra time in your day and you are nearby, it is a cool thing to see!

Book-Off - This is a second hand store that had discounted items from all things Pokemon, Disney, collectors cards, books, Anime collectables, records and so many things! They also were mostly brand new and/or in great condition. We bought lots from these stores and some of the things we got were brand new with tags from the Pokemon Centers and Disneyland! I linked the website so you can find the location that is closest to you here depending on the area you are in the day you are looking!

Day Trip to Mt. Fuji - I might write a whole blog post about our day trip to Mt. Fuji at some point but I’m not completely sure so I will go into detail here! Unfortunately the day that we were scheduled to go to Mt. Fuji, it was pretty much raining the entire day which was honestly so freakin sad. Even though we didn’t get to see Mt. Fuji this day, the Mt. Fuji and Hakone 1-Day Tour turned out to still be fun for us. We really just had to make do with what we were given. We started early at like 7:15 from Matsuya Ginza. The tour bus was super comfortable, with air-conditioning and charging ports, which was nice. The tour was given in english but there were headphones with many other language options that were available. Our guide pretty much made the entire day. She was so nice and funny, she shared stories, history and just fun facts that you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.

One of the highlights was the Hakone Ropeway. Even though the views of Mt. Fuji were mostly hidden behind the clouds, going up the misty mountains still felt magical. And the Lake Ashi cruise was pretty cool as well! The calm waters, the sound of soft rain, and a peaceful vibe almost made you forget about the weather entirely. Lunch was an actually really good. It was served buffet style with tons of options for different dietary restrictions. Everything was fresh and tasty, and it was a great chance to relax before heading to Odawara Station for the bullet train ride back to Tokyo. It was also nice to skip the bus on the way back and take a bullet train! It was so fast which I liked at the end of the tour.

Cost wise, the whole tour cost us $359.28 for two adults ($179.64 each). With all that was included from transportation to food to all the entrance fees—it felt well worth it, it would have been even more exciting if the weather cooperated but it was still a fun expereience. I can’t even imagine the views we would have seen on this tour if the weather was nicer. Even with the rain, the day was packed with memorable and new experiences and a well-organized schedule that made us feel taken care of from start to finish.

Using The Train in Japan

Where to Stay and Play in Tokyo Japan | Taryn Into Travel | Japan Must Do List | Where to Stay When Visiting Japan | Fun Places to See in Japan

Trains in Japan can seem indimidating but were actually pretty easy once we did it a few times. I can’t recommend enough to add a Suica card onto your iPhone’s wallet before you go and load money onto that! We did this and literally just tapped our phones to pay for tickets when we entered and exited the stations. Having the Suica card in your Apple Wallet was so helpful and to do this, you need to add your Suica card to the Wallet app and then enable Express Mode. Enabling Express Mode was what allowed us to use the Suica card without having to unlocking our phones. It was so nice to not have to try and get tickets at each station and this made things so much easier! Most of the signs are really clear and have both Japanese and English. Keep in mind when you’re on the trains to be very respectful and quiet. The trains were always clean, quiet, and in great condition, so my recommendations are to never talk loud or be talking on the phone and also if you have a backpack on, put it on the front of you or place it in the overhead storage. Lastly, the trains were literally always on time so make sure you’re early or you will probably miss your train.

Bullet Train Info

We also used bullet trains to get from Tokyo to Osaka and also to get from Osaka back to Tokyo and we bought our tickets online and it was so easy. We used Klook to get these tickets, I will link that website for you guys here! We got first class tickets to make sure we had a nice seat that we were able to stretch out and be comfortable for the whole trip and that was really nice. I would suggest getting snacks at the train station before you get on the bullet train but they also have snacks and drinks that you can order to your seats which was pretty cool!

Honestly, Tokyo was so cool to experience, there is just so much to see, do, and eat that it felt like every day was a new adventure (and yes, I’m still dreaming about some of those meals)! If you are planning your first trip to Japan, I recommend adding a couple of days in Tokyo if you haven’t already. I hope some of the spots we checked out help you plan your own Tokyo adventure—or at least give you a few ideas to get excited about. If you’ve been before and have any favorite places, definitely let me know—I already can’t wait to go back! As always, if you have any questions at all, please comment below or send me an email at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you asap!

A Perfect Day Trip from Osaka: Nara, Arashiyama, and Kyoto’s Cultural Gems

Hi Friends!

We only did a couple of tours on our trip and I was happy that we limited them but the tours that we did do we loved! We did this tour when we were staying Osaka and it took us on a day trip to Nara Park to see the bowing deer, we saw temples and stunning views, we learned so much and it was incredible! As I said, we started our day in Osaka and had a day full of history, beauty, and unforgettable experiences. I would recommend this one-day adventure for people who want to see a ton of Japan’s history while indulging in iconic sights, culinary delights, and serene landscapes all packed into one day of an amazing itinerary! Below I am breaking down our day by the different chunks of activities we did that were in different parts of the day, happy reading!

Morning: Ancient Wonders in Nara

Our first destination was Nara, they told us that this is Japan’s ancient capital. We started at Nara Park which was one of the main reasons we booked this specific tour at first beucase we wanted to see the bowing deer that live here. This is a sanctuary where there are free-roaming deer that were there to greet us as we arrived but had their own motives of eating the crackers that were for sale that we could purchase when we arrived. The deer are considered sacred messengers in the Shinto religion and in Japan, these deer are a living symbol of Nara’s spiritual importance. We got to walk around, take pictures of the beautiful park covered in cherry blossoms and fed the deer those special crackers that the local vendors were selling to us! While they are friendly, they are also a little bit intense if you have crackers! Dustin and I both got nipped at (not painful at all) on our butts from deer that were jealous of whatever deer you were feeding at the moment. It was so fun, the deer were so cute and we literally couldn’t stop laughing when we were walking around this park! We didn’t do this part but it was an option to see the temple Todai-ji which was just a short walk from the park. This is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the world's largest wooden building which houses the colossal 15-meter-tall bronze Great Buddha (Daibutsu) statue!

Lunch: A Taste of Japan’s Finest

We got the option for the tour where we get lunch which is Kobe Beef Shabu-Shabu at Kyoto Shokujidokoro Wasabi. This restaurant was nestled in a traditional townhouse on the historic grounds of Jurakudai and the food was so so yummy! They were telling us that kobe beef is one of the three major Wagyu breeds in Japan and it has a buttery texture and a ton of marbling. It was also just a really cool experience, we ate on the floor on pillows and it felt very traditional! I liked adding this part to the tour, it just meant that we had less time to explore Arashiyama which was kind of a bummer but I was happy to have that eating experience.

Afternoon: Serenity in Arashiyama

After lunch we were on our way to head to one of Kyoto’s most enchanting districts: Arashiyama. Whether you get the lunch option and have 60 minutes to explore or a full 2 hours here if you skipped the lunch option, you will be blown away with the stunning spots that are in Arashiyama! Our favorite part of this stop was the Bamboo Forest! Seriously the bamboo just towered over us and there was sun peeking through the stocks, the only word I can come up with is just stunning. There were small shops, local cafes and a stunning riverside view in this town as well!

Late Afternoon: Golden Beauty and Spiritual Majesty

The next destination we went to was the stunning Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion. This is another UNESCO World Heritage site and the building is just stunning and covered in gold leaf that reflects on the pond in front of it just like a mirror! It is also surrounded by amazing well kept and pristine gardens! It was such a cool site and the perfect stop on our itinerary! Lastly, the final stop of our day was called Fushimi Inari Taisha. This was a famous spot and for good reason, it has a seemingly endless tunnel of vermilion torii gates, and our guide said that this Shinto shrine is a symbol of good fortune and spiritual journey. From what I understand, each gate that you see had been donated by individuals or businesses to help their businesses and lives succeed or do well. It was really cool to see it all!

Day Trip Cost Breakdown

This day trip from Osaka that was seriously jam packed including Nara Park, Arashiyama, and some of Kyoto’s top cultural gems, was such a great way to see a lot in one day without the stress of planning every detail ourselves. The cost was $94.53 per person, so $189.06 total for two adults. There weren’t any hidden costs really either! Anything that we paid for throughout the day was things like souvenirs and snacks that we wanted when we were on our own during free time. It felt like a really great value considering everything we got to see and experience this day!

Like I said and as you can probably see from reading this blog post, the day was packed with seeing ancient temples and sacred deer to bamboo groves and golden pavilions! We were so happy with the variety of experiences that we had in the one itinerary! It was the perfect combination of history, culture, and nature. Whether you’re excited to try the world-famous Kobe beef eating experience or looking forward to wandering through timeless shrines, I promise you that you will be impressed with each stop that is made throughout the day! If you have any questions you can comment below or as always you can send me an email at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

Visit The Nagai Botanical Gardens in Osaka, Japan

Hi Friends!

About a month ago now I shared a blog post of Where to Eat, Stay and Play in Osaka, Japan. In that post I shared about the Nagai Botanical Garden but we loved it so much I wanted to make sure I did a whole blog post sharing about our experience at Nagai Botanical Garden. I really feel like Osaka is one of those cities that know how to keep you on your toes — one minute you’re weaving through neon-lit streets in Dotonbori, the next you’re eating in takoyaki and laughter at a local market. But if you’re wanting a day that is just a bit a softer or quieter, I’ve got just the place: Nagai Botanical Garden! We went during the day and it was stunning but there was also a way to see the gardens after dark, during one of their Night Light Tours. Think things like lit up glowing trees, illuminated pathways, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels like you are a world away from the city — all without ever leaving Osaka!

The Nagai Botanical Gardens

We didn’t have the Nagai Botanical Gardens on our agenda to start the trip but we had seen it being advertised somewhere while we were there and so we made sure to spend some time visiting the Nagai Botanical Gardens and the Osaka Museum of Natural History. We realized that they were right next to each other which made it easy to visit both. The gardens were so beautifully maintained, with so many walking paths take you through so many colorful seasonal flowers, we saw SO many cherry blossoms! They also had a beautiful ponds and a small forest type area to walk through as well. We learned that there were over 24 hectares inside the gardens and that it was home to over 1,000 species of plants. We seriously loved our visit to the gardens and can’t recommend going enough! It felt like one of those rare spots when you are visiting a new place that not many people know about!

Osaka Museum of Natural History

When we were done walking through the gardens, we stopped into the Osaka Museum of Natural History and the nerd in me LOVED IT. There were tons of exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to local ecosystems which was fun to learn about being in a different country and how things work there. If you are into more science-y stuff I think this would be a cool stop for you as well. I also really liked their small store at the end of exploring, I got quite a few souvenirs from the shop! They had second hand science type books that I brought home and are now used as decor in our house. I love getting souvenirs like that to add to our house!

The Night Light Tour 🌙💡

We found out while we were there that during times of the year, especially during spring and fall, the gardens have a night illumination experience which turns the entire space into something that sounded like it was from a fairytale! I think if we would have known about this we might have planned out visit to be in the evening so we could have seen it! They have a ton of lights on for a full display, think LED installations, light tunnels, and themed sections that make the flowers and trees look like living light sculptures. I think that would be so cool to visit!

What to Know Before You Go:

Anyways, regardless of if you’re traveling solo, planning a romantic evening with someone special, or just want to see a different side of Osaka, the Nagai Botanical Garden’s were really cool to see! It’s quiet, it’s beautiful, and it offers that rare blend of art and nature that makes you slow down and actually take it all in. Being in the city with all of the hustle and bustle, it was nice to spend a morning relaxing in the stunning botanical gardens. glowing softly under a sky full of stars. So if you’re building your Osaka itinerary, don’t just plan for the food and the bright lights — I would recommend saving some time for this little piece of magic. If you end up visiting the gardens I would love to hear about it. If you have any questions you can comment below or send me an email at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you asap!

Spend a Day at Disney Sea in Tokyo Japan

Spend a Day at Disney Sea in Tokyo, Japan!

How to Spend a Magical Day at Tokyo DisneySea – Tips, Rides & More | Planning a trip to Tokyo DisneySea? Discover the best rides, dining tips, must-see attractions, and insider advice to make the most of your Disney Sea day.

Hi Friends! If you're even thinking about going to Tokyo DisneySea, let me stop you right now and say: do it. Seriously, this place is unlike any other Disney park that we have been to! The theming for the park is like next-level, and rides are just done so well! When we were planning our trip to Tokyo we knew Disney Sea and Disneyland had to be on our must do list! We went in early April and I feel like it was just the right time to go because the weather was perfect and the crowds weren’t too bad either. Dustin and I packed in as much magic, food, rides and fun as we could in the one day we were there to see it!

🎟️ Getting There + Buying Tickets

We bought our tickets ahead of time through the official Tokyo Disney Resort website, and I definitely recommend doing that — they can sell out, especially during busy seasons or when there's a new attraction or event happening (like right now the Fantasy Springs area is still new and you need to book ahead to get access to that area. You can also use third-party platforms like Klook if you prefer something in English, but we found the official site worked just fine and I didn't have to worry about transferring anything over or dealing with extra steps.

Getting to the park was very easy because we were staying at Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama (we loved our stay here so much) and it was a quick 5 minute walk to the Disney Resort Line! Walking through the entrance and seeing Mount Prometheus towering above the Mediterranean Harbor was unreal. It really does feel like you’ve stepped into a fantasy world — less like a theme park, and more like looking at an insanely detailed movie set!

🏰 How to Skip the Lines at Tokyo DisneySea

I am not an expert by any means, I just wanted to note what we did and noticed about the fast pass system when we were visiting. From what I understand, the classic paper FastPass system is gone much like other Disney parks, and Tokyo DisneySea now uses Disney Premier Access (paid) and Standby Passes for some attractions. We used the Tokyo Disney Resort app to keep track of wait times, reserve access to certain rides, and even order food — it’s a must. We bought Disney Premier Access for Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival for right away when we got there and once we scanned into the ride we were able to look on the app again and choose another option from Disney Premier Access. We kept doing this throughout the day and adjusting our plan as we knew the next ride we were going on, it helped a ton with avoiding crazy lines.

  1. Rapunzel’s Lantern Festival - This was a new ride in Fantasy Springs where a boat ride took us on a journey through Rapunzel’s world, where they recreated scenes from Tangled all while listening to music from the movie. This was the first ride that we went on this day and it was such a cool experience, I loved the end with the floating lanterns which made us feel like we were in the movie!

  2. Peter Pan’s Neverland Adventure - This ride was such an immersive and high-tech dark ride like I have never experiences. It reminded me a lot of the Rattitouli ride that is at Epcot in Orlando but done so much better. The video was such high quality, the ride was so smooth and I didn’t once feel sick even with my glasses being off and the 3D glasses being on. It was a longer ride too which was nice, especially with the long wait. The ride is really just getting to soar with Peter Pan through Neverland and getting to come face-to-face with pirates, mermaids, and Captain Hook while listening to music and enjoying the show. We loved it and really thought it was done so well and worth the wait in line if you can’t get a fast pass to ride it.

  3. Journey to the Center of the Earth - We didn’t really know what to expect from this ride, we just knew the outside of it was really detailed and cool. We quickly found out that this ride is an expedition into the subterranean world. The ride was a high speed storytelling adventure and we were so happy to check this attraction off of our list! Between the ride’s detailed theming and the giant lava monster encounter at the end, it makes it a must-do ride!

  4. Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull - We also really liked this ride, it reminded me of Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom in Orlando. We got into a jeep and then raced through a cursed temple that was filled with traps, fireballs, and other effects that were inspired by the Indiana Jones movies. It was a fast-paced ride and I wish we had something similar to this at Disney World.

  5. Sinbad’s Storybook Village - Going into this ride we had absolutely no idea what we were going to see. But this is a cute little ride that follows a character named Sinbad and his tiger cub Chandu. Think It’s a Small World but with better music. Basically you are taken on a musical adventure through the different scenes from this show, we didn’t even know what it was and we enjoyed it! Definitely a good ride for all ages.

  6. Fairy Tinker Bell’s Busy Buggies - It was the cutest (family-friendly) ride where we were “shrunk down” to pixie size and then got to explore the cutest and most vibrant fairy garden in buggies. If you like Peter Pan or the Tinker Bell movies on Disney + I really think you will like this ride. It isn’t too fast and perfect for all fans of Tinker Bell.

  7. Raging Spirits - I am not even going to try to sugarcoat this, this ride was the biggest let down of possibly any ride I have ever been on before in my life. It says that it is going to be this super fast roller coaster with a 360 degree loop but that was literally the extent of it. I really think the ride lasted for like 15 seconds and that was it, the loop was a let down and there wasn’t really anything exciting that happened. I can’t even think of a ride to compare it to.. don’t waste your money, I promise it isn’t worth it.

I know I have said this a few times but we were only there for one day so there were a few rides we didn’t have time to go on. We chose to skip Toy Story Mania, Tower of Terror, Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey, and Soaring: Fantastic Flight. We wanted to make sure that we got to go on rides that we wouldn’t be able to here at home. So yes we skipped out on some of the bigger rides but we were definitely okay with it because each of them seemed so similar to rides that we have here in Orlando at Disney World.

🍴 What We Ate

Okay, real talk: everything I watched about the food at Disney Sea was that it was so great and some of the best food they had ever had at a theme park and so on… guys, we weren’t fans of the food at the parks, like at all. There were some things that weren’t horrible but besides the food being really cute and themed well, it didn’t taste great. This is obviously just my opinion but I would lower the idea of the taste of the food at Disney Sea and Disneyland Tokyo quite a bit before you visit! We also really didn’t eat a ton of food on this first day!

🥐 Breakfast

We ate breakfast at our hotel, Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama! We weren’t sure if there were going to be a ton of options for breakfast in the park so we just ate before we went. I’m glad we did this because we were able to get right to going on the rides!

🍛 Lunch

We ate lunch at The Snuggly Duckling in the Fantasy Springs. We got the Fried Shrimp Burger with a side of fries. It was pretty good, the texture of the shrimp was starting to get to me towards the end of the sandwich but the slaw and sauce on it was really good! They also had other burger options to ear here as well!

🍗 Snacks

  • Popcorn – There were so many kinds of popcorn to try. They had flavors like black pepper, caramel, and curry was flavor. They had the option to buy popcorn in regular boxes or you could go all-in with a souvenir bucket — we saw people collecting them like trophies, they were so cute but I couldn’t bring myself to get one and then try to fit it in my suitcase on the way back to the states.

  • Churros – The churros were really good, I got the creme brûlée churro and really liked it!

🍣 Dinner

We kept it casual and grabbed something small in the evening because we were still kind of full. But we both got the Mickey Mouse shaped chicken nuggets and sides of fries. Again, it was pretty bland and there were only two sauce options, spicy harissa sauce and garlic shrimp sauce which weren’t our favorites. But we got these cute nuggets from Cape Cod Cook-Off.

🛍️ Souvenirs We Bought (Because You Have to)

Shopping at Tokyo DisneySea was honestly in my top 5 favorite things that we did while we were there.

Tokyo DisneySea completely lived up to the hype—and really then some! From the park being so insanely detailed with theming, to the fun and unique rides and all the themed snacks and merchandise, it was such a magical day! If you're going to Japan and a Disney fan and you are on the fence about going, I promise it’s 100% worth it. Like I mentioned, we fit all of Tokyo DisneySea into one day and we made the most of every minute. If you have any questions while planning your own trip or want to know more about anything that I mentioned above, feel free to reach out—I’m always happy to chat about anything Disney!

Where to Stay in Osaka

Henn Na Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi - We feel like we picked a hotel with the perfect location in Osaka to all of the things that we wanted to see. The Henn na Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi was a great pick! Just a 10-minute walk from the popular Dotonbori and close to must-see spots like Kuromon Ichiba Market and Osaka Castle, the location was super convenient for exploring. The hotel had a free continental breakfast, free WiFi, and we didn’t know this until after we left but they even bike rentals if you're wanting to explore the city from a bike! The rooms were small but manageable and they were clean and modern, with a nice shower and a deep tub. It was the perfect place to crash at night while staying near the action! We also loved that it was super close to the train station which made it easy to get to places like Nagai Botanical Gardens. It was affordable, clean, centrally located and we would absolutely stay here again!

Where to Eat in Osaka

Coffee Kan Shinsaibashi - We had breakfast here one morning and it was right next to our hotel, like on the same block as it! I got an iced caramel coffee and Dustin got a mocha latte and they were both really good. Then for food we both got their super thick and fluffy pancakes, Dustin got two with basically one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of vanilla ice cream which was super good! I got one pancake (I wish I had gotten two) with basically a thin strawberry jam on top and syrup and that was also really good! We sat downstairs so this didn’t bother us but apparently up on the second floor is a smoking area. Some reviews complained of being able to smell the smoke but honestly we didn’t so take that information as you wish!

Mill Pour Coffee - This was the cutest coffee shop, it was so small but so cute inside! The latte art is what initially drew us in to stop here and I got an iced maple nut latte that was so so good and Dustin got a cafe mocha and he liked his as well. We didn’t get any good pictures of the latte art though because we took our coffees to go!

担々麺 くろおに 南船場店 - This spot was just down the street from our hotel and it was the only ramen spot that I had while we were in Japan that had ground meat and it was delish! It was super rich and the noodles were cooked perfectly. I would give the ramen a 9/10 and the gyoza a 5/10. I didn’t love the gyoza because it was super lemony with hints of ginger and I’m not a huge fan of that, but Dustin liked them a lot more than I did!

Kamakura Shinsaibashi Ramen - This was a ramen chain and we didn’t even really notice that until we were sitting down and eating. The ramen here was okay, Dustin had ramen, I had friend rice which was pretty good and then we shared some gyoza which we liked. But we were so hungry that we just needed to pick a spot and this is what we ended up with! If you’re in a pinch, stop in here but if you have time to look for a better ramen place then I would do that or choose one of the other spots I mention in this blog post!

Hanamaruken Namba Hozenji Ramen Shop - This ramen was SO SO SO good, it might have been the best ramen that I had while we were in Japan. My ramen had beef short ribs on top and I can’t even believe how good it was! The gyoza was also good and Dustin loved his ramen! This was one of those shops that only had about 10 spots to sit and there were so many locals that were eating lunch in here which made us feel good about how much we liked it here! It is in the middle of Dotonburi so plan to stop here if you are in the area exploring on your own trip!

Lekei Ramen Menya Yoshikawa Ramen - This ramen shop was right next to our hotel and Dustin loved this place! It was really good and we had this ramen a couple of late nights after exploring all day! Dustin ate ramen there inside the shop and then also brought the ramen back to us at the hotel and it was really really good!

Bars in Osaka, Japan

Bar Fun - This was the bar that we went to after wandering around Dontonburi all afternoon and we just stopped in th get one drink. One drink turned into two and that turned into us spending the whole night there until it was time to go find a snack before heading to bed! The vibe was very chill, we sat at the bar and played cards for about 3.5 hours and the owner kept serving us and talking with other people that came in and out of the bar throughout the night! It was up on the third level of the building it was in and at first when we got to the door we thought it was closed but it wasn’t so definitely make sure you check the door before deciding to turn away!

Kenny Bar Osaka - We stopped in this bar for our first drink on Dustin’s birthday and we were greeted with literally the nicest old lady that was running the bar! She was so happy that we were in there! I had a glass of red wine and Dustin got this drink that was almost like an experience, it was explained to us that the first shot was the Japanese whiskey as it comes normally and then the second shot is the same Japanese whiskey that had been aged in a barrel. He said it was pretty good! We also got a snack of different nuts that were seasoned with Japanese peppers and they were seriously better than I could have ever imagined. I liked them so much I want to recreate them and have them on hand here at home! Overall the bar was very low key but that is how we like things so it was perfect for us to spend time there.

Kizuna - This bar was where we went after the Kenny Bar on Dustin’s birthday and WOAH. It was seriously a blast, the owner and the other bartender were so fun and nice. They just wanted us to have a good time! They had so many things to offer us, they had a book that translated basic sayings and we actually learned a lot that night. They people that were in the bar were mostly locals that had just gotten off of work and we sang karaoke with them for the entire night! Keeping in mind that this spot is TINY and really only could hold 10-15 people, it was full and everyone was in a great mood! When the whole bar found out it was Dustin’s birthday the owner popped a bottle of champagne and everyone in the bar toasted to Dustin and drank and just had the best time! I can’t recommend this place enough! We loved it!

Sites to See in Osaka, Japan

Dotonburi - We spent a lot of time in Osaka hanging out around Dotonbori! It is super lively, with neon lights and signs and it was packed with energy, incredible food, and tons of photo spots around what felt like every corner. I wanted to note some things to make sure you check out when you’re visiting!

  1. Glico Running Man sign— It is really just a sign to look at but there were so many people taking photos and selfies with this giant sign that was overlooking the canal, this is also where we saw the canal tours happening as well!

  2. Kani Doraku crab sign, another famous landmark but honestly there are SO many signs to look at while you are exploring around! Like giant dumplings, a giant crab, huge chicken nuggets for some reason, different fish… It was actually really cool!

  3. Hozenji Yokocho - This was a cute alley full of traditional eateries and a peaceful moss-covered temple tucked away in the middle of the action, we were so surprised to see this in the middle of the hustle and bustle!

  4. Don Quijote Dotonbori is a massive, 24-hour discount store that’s an experience all on its own, seriously a shopping experience I will never forget. Anything you could ever want or need was inside this store. There is this quirky song playing the whole time and when we were in there, suddenly like three hours had passed. I wish I would have taken photos or a video inside the store but if you look up Don Quijote on Tiktok or Instagram you will get a good idea as to what I am talking about haha!

  5. Gaming Arcades - We went into a couple of these like gaming arcades, they were stories high with claw machines, different arcade games and so much to look at! Think of like a Dave n’ Busters here but three stories high on steroids! It was actually very fun to go into and loose a ton of coins to the claw machines after a couple of drinks! But that might have just been that we weren’t great at playing the claw machines beucase there were actually a ton of people walking around with the prizes that they were trying to get!

  6. Tombori River Cruise, we didn’t get a chance to do this but we saw a lot of tours happening while we were there walking along the canal. But it was the perfect way to take in Dotonbori from the water!

Nagai Botanical Gardens - We didn’t have this on our agenda to start the trip but we had seen it being advertised somewhere while we were there and so we made sure to spend some time visiting the Nagai Botanical Gardens and the Osaka Museum of Natural History—they're right next to each other and made for an easy visit. The gardens are beautifully maintained, with walking paths take you through so many colorful seasonal flowers, we saw SO many cherry blossoms! They also had a beautiful pond and a small forested area to walk through as well. When we were done walking through the gardens, we stopped into the Osaka Museum of Natural History and the nerd in me LOVED IT. There were tons of exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to local ecosystems which was fun to learn about being in a different country and how things work there. It was also only about $6 total for the both of us to get into the Nagai Botanical Gardens and the Osaka Museum of Natural History which is just so worth the price!

Pokemon Center Osaka DX - This pokemon center was on the 9th floor inside the main building of the Daimaru Shinsaibashi shopping mall! If you aren’t staying in the area it is right above the Shinsaibashi Station on the Midosuji Line which was nice and easy to get to and from. We went to this location two time, the first time it was Sunday afternoon and it was absolutely insane inside. The line to check out was super long and it was just very crowded trying to shop so we went back on Tuesday morning and had no problems looking around. If it’s possible for you/your time I recommend visiting during the week rather than on the weekend.

Universal Studios Japan - I plan on writing a whole blog post on Universal Studios Japan because I have a lot to share on things like how to get there, getting your tickets, which tickets to get, what day of the week we went to the park, the rides we went on, what to bring, where we ate and tons more! I will link that blog post here when it gets written but if you have questions before that gets published you can definitely send me an email and I will answer them sooner!

Using The Train in Japan

As I mentioned, Osaka completely stole my heart, and I hope this guide helps it steal yours too. Whether you're planning your first trip or just daydreaming about your next adventure, this city has a way of surprising you at every turn—in the best possible way. From incredible eats to peaceful green escapes and everything in between, there's truly something for everyone who wants to visit. If you end up visiting any of these spots (or find new favorites!), I’d love to hear about it. As always, if you have any questions at all, please comment below or send me an email at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you asap!

Packing for a 14 Day Trip to Osaka and Tokyo Japan

Hi Friends!

We just got back from Japan and I will mention this a few times throughout the blog post I am sure but for some reason, packing for a two-week trip to Osaka and Tokyo during the spring for me was a little bit nerve-racking because I wasn’t sure how the weather was going to be with it fluctuating so much between locations! Packing for such a diverse experience weather wise can be a bit tricky and from my research, spring weather in Japan offers a mix of cool and mild temperatures so it is best to be prepared for most situations! Whether you're strolling through the serene parks of Osaka or navigating the trendy streets of Tokyo, choosing the right outfits is essential for staying comfortable and still cute. I will be sharing in my opinion, the best outfits to pack for your 14-day Japan adventure, to make sure that you're ready for any occasion!

WEATHER IN JAPAN

When we were there it was the first two weeks of April and weather was in about 50-60 degrees in Toyko and 60-70 degrees when we were in Osaka! There were times when it got a little bit chilly but there was only one day where I wish I had something heavier than just my jean jacket and that was beucase it was cold and rainy when we were up near Mt. Fuji so everything was just cold and damp!

At least for me going into the packing portion of this trip I was very overwhelmed for some reason. But I defiantly took the time to find some pieces that I could wear if it was a warmer day or add the right layers and have things to add to the outfit if it was one of the colder days on our trip! I am hoping that with this list you can enjoy your spring trip to Osaka and Tokyo to the fullest without worrying about your wardrobe. From lightweight layers to versatile sneakers, packing smart for a variety of activities and weather conditions will make sure that you are comfortable and prepared throughout your 14-day adventure. If you have any questions at all, I am more than happy to answer those for you! You can drop a comment below or you can email me at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

Spend a Day Exploring Dornoch Scotland with Viator

Hi Friends!

One of the stops on our cruise was a day trip to Dornoch, Scotland! We booked a tour that hit a lot of the stops that we were wanting to check off of our list that had a good mix of history, nature stops, and also local experiences. I am going to share all of the details of the day from exploring the Dunrobin Castle and gardens to exploring the small town of Dornoch with some gluten free stops along the way! There really was something for everyone in our group on this tour that we did and we loved the touches of Harry Potter here and there as well!

There were 6 planned stops on the tour that we booked but we has such an amazing tour guide and honestly our group was great too that we got to add a few stops along the way! I will share which stops were on the planned tour and which stops we got to add in as I talk about them below!

Black Rock Gorge - {unplanned} This spot was the first on our tour and it was a Harry Potter filming location! It is a short scenic walk to get to and the photos seriously don’t do it justice- it was so pretty in person! I believe that this filming location is from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when he is in the dragon portion of the competition! Overall, a very pretty stop that we were happy to add to the day!

Struie Hill - {planned} This is known as the Million Dollar viewpoint that looks over the Dornoch Firth. We stopped here for a few photos before we top here for photos for about 10 minutes before heading to the next stop!

Dornoch Cathedral - {planned} - Dornoch cathedral is in the middle of this cute town that we stopped in and it was made famous by the wedding of Madonna to Guy Ritchie which was a cool fun fact! We walked by it but didn’t go in during the tour!

Milk + Honey - We stopped into this place for lunch on the way when we were in the town of Dornoch and we were pleased with the food that we got! It was a little cafe and I got the yummiest tuna sandwich with cucumber and a side salad! We also got lattes and pie for dessert and it was SO SO GOOD! All of my food was gluten-free and they were very knowledgable of my allergy which was great!

Dornoch Jail & Dornoch Bookstore - {planned} These were also stops that we made while we were in the town of Dornoch and the Dornoch Jail was actually turned into the cutest store with lots too look at! It was fun to see how the jail cells were turned into different sections of things to shop! The Dornoch Bookshop was another fun stop to just browse through the hundreds of books that they had to look through!

Dunrobin Castle and Gardens - {planned} This castle was such a cool stop, we has so much fun exploring the Dunrobin Castle and the gardens that surrounded it. A little backstory, the Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's large castles and has 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland. The castle is in a magnificent setting with amazing gardens. On your visit you will witness an amazing falconry display in the delightful castle gardens. These birds of prey will delight you. Then visit the castle museum before touring the furnished castle itself. The Castle, which resembles a French chateâu with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer. It was so cool and we learned a lot when we were visiting here!

The Tea Room - This was the little cafe that was at the entrance of the Dunrobin Castle but it was really yummy! They had a ton of things that were marked gluten-free. I ordered a cup of soup to go and it was so good! But one thing to note, you can’t take food on the tour so I should have had the soup while I was sitting there- just keep that in mind! But it was really good and definitely recommend it! My parents and Dustin had pastries that weren’t gluten free but they liked them and the lattes that we all got were also good!

Mermaid of the North - {unplanned} - This was another stop that our tour guide stopped at on the way back to the ship! It is a statue that sits on a rock on the shore of the Seaboard Village of Balintore called Mermaid of the North. The sculpture was inspired by local folklore and she was designed as part of a Sculpture Park celebrating local heritage, Folklore, Faith, Fortitude, Fishing & Four Corners of the World. I didn’t have this stop on my list but it was cool to stop and learn a little but more about it when we had time!

Highland Cows - {unplanned} - At the very end of the day we still had some time before we needed to be back on the ship so we took the long way back and tried to find some Highland Cows at a local farm. Our guide, Emma, was so nice and took us to a few farm areas before we found some! They were way out in the field but that was perfect and we got to check seeing Highland Cows off our Scotland bucket list!

If you are anything like us, you will really leave the town of Dornoch and Dunrobin Castle with fun memories of their history, the stunning landscapes, and the charm of it all. Whether you're admiring the views from the castle grounds or enjoying a gluten-free meal at one of the local cafes, it’s clear that this corner of Scotland offers something special for every traveler! Let me know if you eat at any of these spots! If you have any questions you can comment below or as always you can send me an email at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

Where to Eat, Stay and Play Around Iceland

Hi Friends!

Iceland was the first stop in our 14 day adventure last summer and it’s just about the last blog post that I have on the docket to write! The first thing to note about Iceland was that it went NOWHERE near what we originally had planned itinerary wise. Instead of being in Iceland for 4, almost 5 days- we spent two of those days in the Minneapolis airport (insert nervous sweating emoji)… ANYWAYS, once we finally got there we had a lot of ground to cover in less time than we had planned but we really tried to make the best of it! I should also note that the mishaps and plans continued to get changed for pretty much the entirety of the trip but I wanted to share the itinerary and things we did do and our experiences anyway! So buckle in while I tell you the ADVENTURE we went on while we were exploring Iceland in June!

A Few Things to Have on Hand!

  1. Rain Jacket

  2. Umbrella

  3. Backpack for purchases

  4. Camera or Phone for pictures

  5. LAYERS! I was so thankful that I had a rain jacket, a sweatshirt and a t-shirt on because I shed and added layers all day long!

Day One in Iceland

When we arrived in Iceland, my parents picked us up at the airport and then we pretty much immediately started driving to go see all of the sights in the The Golden Circle. This is a very popular touristy route that you can take in southern Iceland that covers about 300 km/180 miles and you can loop from Reykjavík into the southern uplands and then back. With our shortened time we didn’t get to all of them but I will list the popular ones below with some info on the stop!

  1. Þingvellir National Park: A site of historical, cultural, and geological significance, Þingvellir was the location of Iceland's ancient parliament and lies in a rift valley marking the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

  2. Gullfoss Waterfall: Known as the "Golden Falls," this two-tiered waterfall on the Hvítá river cascades into a deep crevice, creating a stunning display of natural beauty.

  3. Geysir Geothermal Area: Home to the famous Geysir and its active neighbor Strokkur, which erupts every 5–10 minutes, this geothermal area showcases Iceland's geothermal activity.

  4. Kerið Volcanic Crater: A volcanic crater lake located in the Grímsnes area, Kerið is known for its visually recognizable caldera and aquamarine-colored water.

  5. Faxi Waterfall (Vatnsleysufoss): Situated on the Tungufljót river, Faxi is a picturesque waterfall known for its salmon-filled waters and a popular spot for fishing.

If you are short on time, adding a few or all of these destinations to your list is an easy way to see many things in a shorter amount of time. We got to see so many different areas of Iceland along The Golden Circle route.

At the end of this day we stayed in a little two bedroom cabin in Þingvellir National Park. I will link the cabin that we stayed in here, we paid $220 for the night but it was a good location and you could look out onto Þingvallavatn lake which is seriously stunning. We booked this cabin through Airbnb, it was small but had anything we really could have needed. I wouldn’t plan on making a five course meal but we were able to make dinner and breakfast here without any problems.

Day Two in Iceland

Coffee shop in Penninn - We went in to browse the bookstore and grabbed a coffee while we were in there. The bookstore was so cute and had so many options book wise. I know it was the middle of June when we were there but Dustin and I both got a pumpkin spiced latte and it really just hit the spot! It was so good, not too sweet, so good!

Hallgrímskirkja - This is also known as the Church of Hallgrímur and was high on our to-do list when we were in Reykjavik! Its has a really cool modern design which we learned is inspired by Iceland's volcanic landscapes! It is super tall and it stands tall as one of the city's most famous landmarks. When we were there we also walked along Rainbow Road.

Rainbow Road - This is a really cool street with colorful crosswalks that symbolize the city's spirit of inclusivity and love. Both were high on our must see lists and they were right next to each other, making for an easy stop! There were also a lot of shops to wander around in and out of along this road which we took advantage of! We liked this bookstore called Bókabúðin Bergstaðastræti and this record shop called Geisladiskabúð Valda.

Experience Iceland
Experience Iceland

Krua Thai Restaurant - We were visiting Rainbow Road and the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church right around lunch time and we were so happy to stumble into the yummiest food we had in Iceland! They had a lot of gluten free options and the waiter was very knowledgeable of my gluten allergy. I honestly think that our waiter was the owner as well but nonetheless, knowledgeable! I decided to get the Pad Thai and I added chicken, it was SO good! We were also able to get whatever spice level that we wanted. Dustin got the chicken Kuayda Pad with rice and it was like a red curry. It was also able to be made gluten free! The portions were huge and I ended up taking about half of mine to go for later, side note, it reheated well!

We stayed at a farmhouse that was right next to a lighthouse and the beach but since we stayed there the house was taken off of Airbnb, but if we were going to do it all again, we probably would have stayed in Reykjavik! We only stayed where we did to be closer to The Blue Lagoon but that wasn’t necessary after all and staying near the port where we got on our ship would have been a good idea as well!

Day Three in Iceland

The Blue Lagoon - We were supposed to wake up early on this morning and go to The Blue Lagoon for our 8:30am slot but while we were on our way there from the airbnb we were told that there was no way to get to The Blue Lagoon due to volcano activity that was happening on the road. We were so sad but obviously would rather be safe than put ourselves in danger so we didn’t get to see The Blue Lagoon. The staff was very helpful and offered to move our reservation date but with it being our last day there they refunded our tickets. If you’re going I would absolutely recommend trying to visit The Blue Lagoon. Possibly plan to do this early in your trip just in case there needs to be adjustments to your reservation for any reason. One tip we did hear when we were on our cruise but not before the trip was to not let your hair go into The Blue Lagoon because it makes it feel gross even after washing it.

FlyOver Iceland - When we found out that we weren’t going to be able to go to The Blue Lagoon we pivoted, went to lunch at Rost and then decided to do the FlyOver Iceland experience in Reykjavik which was pretty cool. FlyOver Iceland is sort of like Soarin’ at Epcot for those of you who have done that! It suspends you in the air, giving you the feeling of flight while watching a film that takes you on a journey across Iceland while also using special effects like wind, scents and mist which is just a very cool interactive experience. It was about $40 a person for the whole tour and movie, I think it was really cool to watch and see what we missed on our trip.

Experience Iceland coffee
Experience Iceland

Rost Reykjavik - This was a coffee shop that was closer to the cruise port but we stopped here for breakfast before we got onto our ship! To eat I got the hot ham and cheese on gluten free bread, it was good! Dustin got one of their specials that was specific to that day but it was out of his comfort zone and he still loved it. To drink I got the one of their special lattes that was being advertised on the chalk board but it had like caramel popcorn on top and was so good! It was definitely more of a sweet treat rather than a regular coffee situation! Dustin just had a latte and liked that as well!

Driving in Iceland

With all that we wanted to do and see in a short amount of time, we opted to rent a car and drive around Iceland on our visit. At first we were hesitant of what it would be like driving in Iceland as a tourist but after doing it, it was absolutely the right choice for us. The roads were well-maintained, there were clear signs for directions and really there wasn’t too much traffic. We got to see lots of stunning views of volcanic mountains, geysers, glaciers, and waterfalls, there was so much scenery to take in literally around every turn. There were some roads that were a little more narrow or were gravel, especially in more remote areas so I would definitely recommend to always drive carefully, be alert and also to be prepared for varying weather conditions. But overall, driving in Iceland was relatively easy, and the freedom to stop whenever you want to take in the different views of the island was one of the best parts! Lastly, the locals are friendly and helpful, so if you need any assistance, don't hesitate to ask. This might absolutely be different for you depending on when you are visiting but for 4 days it was about $475 for our rental car!

Experience Iceland
Experience Iceland

After three fun filled days exploring Iceland, we got to see and experience so many things. We loved seeing the landscapes of The Golden Circle and adventure of missing being able to relax in The Blue Lagoon. Iceland was such a huge destination to check off of our bucket lists and we definitely recommend visiting! Whether you're wanting to see the stunning waterfalls, walking through volcanic craters, or trying Icelandic meals, you will make so many memories on the trip! As always, if you have any questions at all, please comment below or send me an email at tarynintotravel@gmail.com and I will get back to you asap!

Spend a Day in Malmo, Sweden

Hi Friends!

As I mentioned before, when we got off of our cruise we had 3 days in Copenhagen and Sweden and we spent one of those days exploring near our hotel in Malmo, Sweden! We didn’t have a whole lot on our list of what we wanted to see so we just let the day take us where it went. Even without a plan we had a lot of fun eating yummy food, exploring a castle and wandering the streets of Malmo!

Explore the vibrant city of Malmö, Sweden in a day with top sights and attractions.

Where to Stay!

Raddison Blu Hotel, Malmo

I touched on where we stayed in the blog post called Spend Two Days in Copenhagen, Denmark but I will share about the hotel here as well! After the cruise, we stayed three days in Malmo, Sweden because it was a lot cheaper than staying in Copenhagen but it allowed us to explore parts of Sweden and parts of Denmark while costing a little bit less. It was really nice because we were a quick train ride from anywhere we wanted to go and we didn’t feel like we were missing out on anything by staying in Malmo! We stayed at Raddison Blu Hotel, Malmo and it was such a nice spot to stay and the location couldn’t have been better! It was nice and clean, the staff was super friendly, they had air conditioning in our rooms, comfortable beds, tea and coffee in the room and the rooms were huge!

Breakfast and Coffee

Nybergs - We stopped in here to get coffee actually a couple of times! We liked stopping in here to grab a coffee after getting off the train before going back to the hotel because it was on the walk from the train station to the hotel. We also got breakfast here once as well and it was pretty good! I got scrambled eggs and bacon. They also had surprisingly quite a few gluten free pastries to choose from as well. I had an almond type cookie and also like a moon pie thing as well and both were good! They also had wifi which was nice to have when we needed it. Even if you don’t stop for coffee, it is a great place to stop and to check on missed messages!

Information on Malmo Museum!

Malmohus Castle - The Malmohus Castle is the oldest surviving Renaissance castle. We spend about an hour wandering around the castle and then we spend about 30ish minutes in the science museum portion of the castle which was (in my opinion) really cool! The castle was built between 1526 and 1539 and is the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in the Nordic region, inside there was a ton to look at from history to fashion to animals. There was so much inside! It cost Dustin and I about $18 to visit both sides of the museum. They also had the cutest gift shop, I seriously kick myself for not getting anything from there, I loved the things they had!

Lunch

MAX - We stopped here pretty much as soon as we checked into our hotel and I would say it is like their McDonalds. But here they had gluten free options and that was SO exciting! I had a bacon cheeseburger and a side of fries but I got the cheese fries that had onion and jalapeños on top. All of it was really good and we were thankful to have a quick meal to eat and we would definitely eat here again.

Stortorget Historic Market Square - After we went to the museum and had lunch it was raining pretty hard but we still wanted to explore the area. We found ourselves wandering around Stortorget Historic Market Square and there were a ton of people just hanging out, having lunch and lounging. It was really pretty and had some cool historic spots as well if you are wanting to check some that kind of thing out!

Dinner Ideas

Sabaidee Thai Trianglen - This was another place that we ordered dinner to the hotel when we were in Malmo and it was SO freakin good! Before this trip I have had curry but this Thai place had a red curry that in the most dramatic way possible, changed my life haha! It was so good and I wish I could find a place here in Florida that properly replicated the curry that we had. We also had pad Thai in our order which was really good but it had chilis on top of it that I didn’t see and I put about four of them in my mouth at one time and I’m not sure I have been the same since, lol it was SO spicy! I’m sure if I would have ordered it without the chilis it would have been just as good! We defiantly recommend to order from this spot, just be careful with the spice levels of things if that isn’t something you enjoy!

Explore local Swedish food in Malmö's restaurants, offering a variety of culinary delights.

Davidshall Pizzeria - We ordered this pizza one night after a long day of exploring and it didn’t disappoint! It was really yummy, the crust was shockingly good. You gluten free friends know that crust isn’t the thing we get excited about when it comes to pretty much anything haha but it was really good! I got the Margherita Pizza and it was so good, would absolutely get it again if I was given the chance! My parents got a non gluten free Hawaiian type of pizza and they liked it as well! We can’t remember what Dustin had but he said it whatever it was he liked it! It was nice to have many options to order in after long exploring days, we ordered in dinner all of the nights that we were in Malmo, actually!

After the cruise was over we were happy to have a day where we just sort of strolled around and didn’t have a strict plan. Malmo was cute and unexpected, plus it was really cool to see where Dustin travels for work a few times a year! He got to show us around which I loved! Have you been to Malmo or any other part of Sweden? I honestly never really had Sweden on my radar until recently but I’m glad to have spent some time there!
